What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the nose for aesthetic or functional reasons. It can correct deviations, reduce or augment nasal size, refine the tip, and improve breathing function.

Whether your goal is to achieve better facial harmony, correct a congenital defect, or restore nasal function after trauma, rhinoplasty provides customized solutions tailored to each individual’s anatomy and desires.

This minimally invasive technique prioritizes incisions inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or a small external incision (open rhinoplasty) to minimize visible scarring and ensure precise structural changes.

How is Rhinoplasty Done?

Rhinoplasty Procedure

The Procedure

Rhinoplasty can be performed using either a closed or open approach. In a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are inside the nostrils. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made on the columella (tissue between the nostrils) to allow greater visibility and access.

During surgery, nasal bones and cartilage are reshaped to achieve the desired contour. If functional correction is needed, septal cartilage may be repositioned to improve breathing. Once the new structure is formed, incisions are closed, and a nasal splint is placed to support healing.

Typical surgery duration is 2–3 hours, depending on complexity. Most patients go home the same day or after an overnight stay.

Step-by-Step Process

1

Consultation

Detailed evaluation of nasal anatomy, facial proportions, and patient goals. Imaging and 3D simulations may be used to preview potential results.

2

Anesthesia

Procedure is performed under general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and safety throughout the surgery.

3

Incision

Either closed or open approach is selected based on surgical needs. Incisions are placed to minimize visible scarring while allowing precise access.

4

Reshaping

Cartilage and bone are carefully adjusted, removed, or grafted to create desired shape. Functional improvements are made concurrently if needed.

5

Closure & Support

Incisions are closed with fine sutures. A nasal splint and soft internal packing may be placed to support the new structure during initial healing.

6

Recovery

Splints and packing are typically removed within one week. Swelling gradually subsides over several weeks to months, revealing the final nasal contour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most surgeons recommend waiting until facial growth is complete, typically around 16-18 years for females and 18-20 years for males. However, exceptions can be made for functional rhinoplasty to correct breathing issues earlier.

Patients are under general anesthesia during surgery and experience minimal discomfort afterward. Prescription pain medications and cold compresses help manage any post-operative pain effectively.

Initial swelling and bruising typically subside within 1–2 weeks. Most patients return to normal activities within 7–10 days. Final results become apparent over 6–12 months as residual swelling resolves.

In most cases, incisions are placed inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty), leaving no external scars. If an open approach is used, the small incision on the columella is strategically placed and typically fades very well over time.

Candidacy depends on your nasal anatomy, facial proportions, and health status. Dr. Roy evaluates each patient’s medical history, nasal structure, and cosmetic goals during consultation to recommend the best approach.
