How is Rhinoplasty Done?

The Procedure

Rhinoplasty can be performed using either a closed or open approach. In a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are inside the nostrils. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made on the columella (tissue between the nostrils) to allow greater visibility and access.

During surgery, nasal bones and cartilage are reshaped to achieve the desired contour. If functional correction is needed, septal cartilage may be repositioned to improve breathing. Once the new structure is formed, incisions are closed, and a nasal splint is placed to support healing.

Typical surgery duration is 2–3 hours, depending on complexity. Most patients go home the same day or after an overnight stay.
